CENTENNIAL, Colo. (March 1, 2017) — Innovation Pavilion (IP), an ecosystem for entrepreneurs based in Denver South, announced plans to create a community designed to accelerate Colorado’s space industry into a national and global hub. This endeavor is the brainchild of seasoned aerospace professional Jameel Barkat and IP’s visionary CEO Vic Ahmed.
With over 30 years of experience, Barkat brings an in-depth knowledge of the industry to the Innovation Pavilion ecosystem. He has served in operational and leadership roles at various aerospace corporations including Boeing and Curtiss-Wright, as well as smaller companies. His broad expertise spans engineering, sales and marketing, program management, mergers and acquisitions, strategy development, integration (of acquired companies) and global supply chain management.
Barkat’s illustrious career has included evaluations of several hundred transactions, resulting in 20 closed deals and deployment of over $400 million. In his most recent position as founder and principal of Capricorn Capital Partners, he specialized in working with and investing in growth stage companies.
“Jameel’s impressive portfolio makes him the ideal leader for this initiative. Colorado has a strong space cluster, but in order to compete with disruption from national and global competitors, the industry needs a burst of innovation,” observed Ahmed. “I am confident that under Jameel’s stewardship, our newest community will do precisely that.”
Barkat will be spearheading this most recent addition to the IP ecosystem. Branded “NovaSpace,” the community applies Innovation Pavilion’s vision of productive collisions and creative solutions to the space industry by facilitating an explosion of ideas. NovaSpace will provide Colorado’s space cluster, comprising 400-plus businesses and over 50,000 employees, with the community and platforms it needs to meet its growth potential.
The community will achieve this by developing and strengthening connections between the space sector and the broader aerospace and defense industry. Its operation will focus on the intersections of the space vertical with various technology horizontals, including advanced materials and manufacturing, C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance), and emerging technologies.
“Innovation Pavilion is the sort of place where opportunities just walk through the door. It has such a thriving ecosystem and I cannot think of a better platform for NovaSpace,” remarked Barkat. “This is an exciting time for the industry, and we want to be a powerhouse for upcoming innovations. I look forward to what we can achieve with IP and its many partners.”
NovaSpace joins the diverse set of communities at Innovation Pavilion, which includes successes in digital health (Prime Health), Internet of Things (TechrIoT) and adtech (ADvocate). The space community will take a similar approach as its predecessors by convening stakeholders, providing access to innovative companies, mentors, service providers, customers and a trained workforce, and conducting an accelerator.
It is the latest tool in Innovation Pavilion’s kit to achieve its ambitious agenda of transforming economic landscapes and entrepreneurial communities across the country. With exciting projects and enthusiastic partners in the pipeline, NovaSpace is set to launch in the coming months and bring immense benefit to the community.
